M201 - coil spring reinforcement for weapon carriers

Early M201s requiring reinforced suspension were fitted with additional leaves to the rear springs and stronger shock absorbers. A later development was the fitting of coil spring units to reinforce the standard rear leaf spring suspension.

This was found on M201s with mounted weapons including the MILAN & 106SR. The coil springs were part of a cleverly designed kit which clamped round the rear axle and bolted to the main chassis rail. Thanks to Tim tearle for the photo of the complete kit (shown opposite).

The only major modification that was needed was due to the fact that the shock absorber could no longer exist in its normal upright position. Instead it had to be angled forward and secured to a bracket bolted to the top of the chassis rail (see photo opposite).

If your M201 has the shock absorbers mounted in this way then the chances are that it was once a MILAN or 106SR weapon carrier and the coil spring units have been removed.
